Forward Deployed Engineer - AI Agents

The Opportunity

We are partnering with one of the fastest-scaling AI companies globally, now building its founding technical team in Australia.

This is a rare opportunity to join a category-leading enterprise AI platform at a pivotal stage of growth. The company has crossed US$100m+ in ARR, raised US$270m+ from tier-one investors, and operates at unicorn scale, backed by some of the most respected venture firms in the world.

The business is building production-grade AI agents for complex enterprise environments - helping global organisations automate, augment, and transform high-volume customer interactions. Its platform is already deployed across major enterprise customers, with strong traction across contact centres, financial services, telecommunications, insurance, retail, and other large-scale customer-facing industries.

This is not a research role, and it is not a traditional solutions engineering role. It sits at the intersection of software engineering, AI agents, customer deployment, product iteration, and enterprise problem-solving.

As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you will work directly with customers to design, build, deploy, and optimise AI agent solutions that solve real business problems in production.

Why This Role Matters

Each enterprise AI agent deployment requires deep technical ownership - system integration, customer-specific code, workflow design, prompt tuning, quality evaluation, performance optimisation, and ongoing iteration.

You will be the engineer closest to the customer problem.

You will work across external stakeholders, internal product teams, machine learning engineers, software engineers, customer success, and implementation teams to turn ambiguous enterprise requirements into working AI systems.

The best person for this role is a strong engineer who wants more ownership, more customer context, more commercial impact, and more exposure to how the next generation of AI products are deployed in the real world.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Build, configure, deploy, and optimise AI agents using a world-class enterprise AI platform.
  • Integrate AI agents into customer environments across APIs, databases, CRMs, webhooks, data pipelines, and internal systems.
  • Work directly with customers to gather technical requirements, clarify use cases, define success metrics, and translate business problems into technical solutions.
  • Fine-tune prompts, workflows, configurations, retrieval flows, and agent behaviours to improve performance, accuracy, reliability, and customer outcomes.
  • Build customer-specific tooling, implementation scripts, integrations, and lightweight product extensions where required.
  • Troubleshoot complex deployment issues across enterprise environments.
  • Conduct technical demos, proof-of-concepts, workshops, and solution walkthroughs with senior customer stakeholders.
  • Partner closely with product managers, machine learning engineers, software engineers, customer success, and delivery teams.
  • Create implementation plans, define milestones, manage technical delivery, and ensure deployments move quickly without compromising quality.
  • Provide technical guidance on architecture, security, scalability, reliability, monitoring, and AI agent adoption.
  • Feed real-world deployment learnings back into product and engineering to influence the roadmap.
  • Document repeatable patterns, workflows, implementation learnings, and best practices for future deployments.

What You’ll Bring

  • 3+ years of experience in software engineering, AI engineering, ML engineering, systems integration, data engineering, or a highly technical customer-facing engineering role.
  • Strong coding ability, ideally in Python. Golang experience is highly regarded.
  • Experience building, integrating, or deploying software in production environments.
  • Strong understanding of APIs, webhooks, databases, data flows, system integrations, and enterprise software environments.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML concepts, especially LLMs, AI agents, RAG, function calling, prompt engineering, evaluations, and workflow orchestration.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Exposure to DevOps practices such as CI/CD, containerisation, monitoring, observability, and deployment pipelines.
  • Strong problem-solving ability in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Commercial judgement - you understand that the best technical solution is the one that works, scales, and creates measurable customer value.
  • A builder’s mindset - curious, practical, resourceful, and comfortable owning problems end-to-end.

You’ll Be a Strong Fit If You Are

  • A software engineer who wants to work closer to customers and real-world AI deployment.
  • An applied AI engineer who wants to build systems that make it into production.
  • A customer-facing engineer who still wants to code.
  • A consultant-engineer hybrid who enjoys solving complex enterprise problems.
  • A technical founder, founding engineer, or startup engineer who has worn multiple hats.
  • A systems thinker who can move from architecture to code to customer conversation in the same day.
  • Someone who is excited by AI agents, LLMs, enterprise automation, and the chance to help define a new category.

Ideal Backgrounds

We are especially interested in people coming from:

  • Forward Deployed Engineering
  • Applied AI Engineering
  • AI Agent Engineering
  • Software Engineering
  • Machine Learning Engineering
  • Data Engineering
  • Solutions Architecture
  • Technical Consulting
  • Systems Integration
  • Startup Engineering
  • AI/ML consulting or professional services
  • Enterprise SaaS implementation with strong engineering depth

Relevant environments may include high-growth AI companies, elite software companies, cloud providers, data platforms, technical consultancies, or engineering-led startups.

Why Join Now

  • This is one of the highest-leverage moments to join the company.
  • The business has strong revenue traction, significant funding, elite investors, and a clear enterprise use case for AI agents. The Australian market is being built now, meaning early hires will have the opportunity to shape the region, work closely with global leadership, and become part of the founding technical team locally.
  • You will be joining at the point where the product is proven, the market is accelerating, and the regional team is still early enough for exceptional people to have outsized impact.

What Makes This Different

  • Most engineering roles keep you several steps away from the customer.
  • Most customer-facing roles take you too far away from the code.
  • This role gives you both.
  • You will write production-quality code, solve complex integration problems, work with cutting-edge AI agent systems, advise enterprise customers, and directly influence the product through what you learn in the field.
  • It is a rare blend of engineering depth, customer exposure, AI specialisation, and commercial impact.

Compensation

Highly competitive package for exceptional technical talent, with flexibility depending on experience and role fit.

Location

Australia-based. Remote-friendly, with customer engagement and occasional travel as required.
